Consonant articulation and vocabulary size: Twins versus singletons

چکیده
Abstract Turkish-speaking dyzygotic twins (n = 21) and singletons 23) were tested through a standard articulation test to observe whether their consonant articulations related vocabulary sizes, recorded CDI forms, at age 3;0. Twins observed lag behind singleton peers performed below the norm level in production. Vocabulary size failed predict twins’ scores although it predicted of group. The results suggested that was not twins. Exposure sibling language discussed as an alternative risk factor.

Phonologic error distributions in the Iowa-Nebraska Articulation Norms Project: consonant singletons.
The errors on consonant singletons made by children in the Iowa-Nebraska Articulation Norms Project (Smit, Hand, Freilinger, Bernthal, & Bird, 1990) were tabulated by age range and frequency. The prominent error types can usually be described as phonological processes, but there are other common errors as well, especially distortions of liquids and fricatives. Moreover, some of the relevant pho...

learning a second or foreign language requires the manipulation of four main skills, namely, listening, reading, speaking, and writing which lead to effective communication. it is obvious that vocabulary is an indispensible part of any communication, so without a vocabulary, no meaningful communication can take place and meaningful communication relies heavily on vocabulary. one fundamental fac...
Consonant recognition and the articulation index.
The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into how speech is processed by the auditory system, by quantifying the nature of nonsense speech sound confusions. (1) The Miller and Nicely [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 27(2), 338-352 (1955)] confusion matrix (CM) data are analyzed by plotting the CM elements Si,j(SNR) as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This allows for the robust clusteri...
متن کاملWord-level asymmetries in consonant articulation
A variety of studies have shown articulatory asymmetries between consonants which are initial vs. final in their syllable and/or word; however, the asymmetry is not always found and its nature is not clear. In this paper we investigate some factors that might seem to make the asymmetry less than universal, using dynamic electropalatography. First, we considered a range of consonants, to see whe...
متن کاملClassification of stop consonant place of articulation
One of the approaches to automatic speech recognition is a distinctive feature-based speech recognition system, in which each of the underlying word segments is represented with a set of distinctive features. This thesis presents a study concerning acoustic attributes used for identifying the place of articulation features for stop consonant segments. The acoustic attributes are selected so tha...
